NOTICE: Registering & Possible Log In Changes

Postby Trojan Horse » Thu Mar 25, 2010 8:51 pm

I have had to increase the foreground noise in the Registration procedure to cut down on spammers.
I received notice from our website provider that the site was using too many resources and that I would have to correct the problem or purchase a larger account.
After doing some research we determined it was the spammers and their posting of links and other crap that caused the problem.
Hopefully this will help resolve it.

Sorry for any inconveniences this may cause guys/gals,

Update:

Recent changes and IP bans have finally caused the problem that I feared would happen. :veryangry:
ieatricers, (Dave) has been unable to get on site because one of the IP ranges I banned evidently is in his interconnection to us.
I have spent (literally) hours determining what IP range he is in and going through thousands of IP's trying to get his path cleared.
Hopefully I was successful. I will need to figure out some way to block the spammers from registering and posting up their crap as it causes problems with the resource limits from our provider.
For now I have had to close the open registration and enable administrator approved registrations only.
If anyone knows of a better way please let me know, as I am still pretty new to this and totally ignorant of a lot of things that I might be able to do.

Once again I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Hey Bobby... looks like my home ISP IP is also in that range.... my Fiancee is trying to register with the forms and is already getting the Banned message, and I was getting it last night too. I'll send you the IP when I get home, when you're ready... though you'll need to send me a message through Facebook or email haha

Bob,
Can't we have a moderator enable new accounts? I.e. someone registers and then it gets sent to the admin/mods for approval? Not sure if we can have some kind of mustang-related anti-spammer question involved there, but may be worth a look?

Yes, that's what I am doing now. If I can enable moderators to do so too I will. :goodjob:
I'll check into it now.
Hopefully I have not banned any other user's IP ranges. :embarrassed:
